NMF once again reports a farming company for escaping salmon

This time it is the farming company Bjørøya A/S that reports the escape of 6,000 farmed salmon of 5.7 kg. in Roan municipality, Trøndelag.

Escaped farmed salmon are a threat to wild salmon as they have different genetic material. When escaping, the wild salmon's genes are seriously contaminated by the farmed salmon. The wild salmon strains are genetically programmed to survive in their natural environment, and in their childhood river in particular, through 1000's of years of evolution. The farmed salmon are genetically designed through breeding to grow as quickly as possible inside the cages. However, both spawn in the same watercourse, and genetic mixing therefore results.
